Play With Us

BCO is often a tiered orchestra, with professional principals often playing side-by-side with talented volunteers. We’re on the search for great musicians with something to offer the orchestra and the Brixton community. We are particularly interested in hearing from players originally from or based in and around Lambeth.

Volunteers

If you are skilled at your instrument and have experience playing with others, you can audition for a volunteer position. We have vacancies in all strings, trombone, horn, oboe, bassoon & percussion. Our volunteers join the orchestra for around three to five concerts per year. There is no regular weekly rehearsal, but instead a more focussed evening and weekend schedule in the week leading up to a performance. We never charge any subs to play in the orchestra.

Auditions take place in Spring and Autumn. Join our mailing list to be notified of audition dates.

Students

If you’re at college, university or conservatoire, apply for a student position in BCO! You’ll perform with us for full-orchestral concerts, community tours and select fusion projects. We know money is tight for students, so on top of no subscription, you also get paid! Student positions last one year and are renewable.

Professionals

If you have completed professional training, you can apply to join our dep list. Principal chairs, as and when vacancies arise, are offered to regular deps who fit in well both in terms of playing ability and style, and also BCO’s community values.

Audition Information

Auditions are informal and always in Brixton.
There is a panel which consists of the Music Director, a principal player and a trustee.
You will be asked to bring a piece of solo classical music, to play unaccompanied..
We will also set orchestral excerpts and you will be asked to attempt some sight reading.
All auditionees will have the option to present a second piece in any style or genre which may strengthen their application.
